Visiting pastors in Gasorwe

- Pastor Gatera with Rachael Lofgren
In my role as IAFR’s Refugee Church Consultant, I recently visited a group of pastors in Gasorwe refugee camp in Burundi.
"Our request is that you help us get Bibles.”
"Our request is that you help us get Bibles. Many of our people here in Gasorwe Refugee Camp do not have a Bible. We need Bibles in three different languages, including Kirundi, Swahili and Kinyarwanda. It is difficult for us to get Bibles because they are very expensive. Now that our food rations have been severely reduced, we cannot afford to buy them."
I was sitting with a small group of refugee pastors in a forgotten camp in the northeast corner of Burundi. Several Burundian church leaders and I had traveled here to listen to them. We wanted to learn about the challenges they are facing and hear what was on the hearts of the pastors who care for refugee churches here. They shared about the need for water, sanitation, and adult literacy classes, but Bibles were uppermost in their minds.
I asked God to hear their request and provide.
As I prayed with these pastors before we concluded our meeting, I asked God to hear their request and provide a way for His words in their language to be delivered to Gasorwe.
In a place where food and water shortages are extreme and so many physical needs exist, my brothers in Christ asked for something even more precious than physical food. They asked for Bibles in their heart language. They also asked for training so that they can better serve God in this challenging place where they shepherd God's people.
