53 million IDP
May 20, 2022
- Tom Albinson
Over 53 million people worldwide were uprooted their homes by conflict and violence in 2021. This number does not include refugees, but only those who were forcibly displaced within their homeland (refugees are people who have been forced to flee both their homes and their country). Ethiopia, DR Congo, Afghanistan, and Myanmar are among the countries that "saw unprecedented levels of conflict-related displacement in 2021".
This was before the Russian invasion of Ukraine that has internally displaced another 8 million people so far this year.
This is reported by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) and Norwegian Refugee Council in their Global Report on Internal Displacement 2022. I encourage you to take a look at the report that includes user-friendly infographics (including the video above).
The number of internally displaced persons, asylum seekers, and refugees continues to escalate due to war, persecution, and gross violations of human rights.
Forced displacement is a defining issue of the 21st century. The world needs to find ways to reverse this long-term trend.
Blessed are the peacemakers. - Jesus
