An Uknown Number

Feb 1, 2024

- Sarah Miller with Rachael Lofgren

I almost didn't answer the call from an "unknown number," suspecting a spam call. But something in me prompted me to answer.

"Hello, this is Sarah."

"Hello, Sarah!"

Ms. C, my Burmese friend's voice, came over the line, and I was suddenly glad I had answered the call.

Ms. C's Uncertain Future

She was calling using her new phone number from her new home in Indianapolis. We had a reunion of sorts as we caught up on each other's lives. She told me about their new asylum interview appointments for July 2024 and the exciting news that they are expecting a baby girl in February. Her husband is in ministerial training with their church, and their two boys are healthy and thriving. "For all these good things, I thank God for His provision," Ms. C told me.

"I miss our in-person visits when you lived in St. Paul," I told her. "I pray for a positive outcome of your asylum interview and anticipate celebrating with you what God can do."

"God will provide for us. I know this," she told me. I heard in her words that she trusts God with their uncertain future.

Many More Stories in 2024

During an organization-wide Zoom call later, I heard story after story of answered prayer on behalf of individual refugees and asylum seekers from my colleagues, including the story of the reunification of a young family. In the coming year, I anticipate and hope for many more stories of God's engagement with forcibly displaced people like my Burmese friend, Ms. C.
