Empty-Handed, but Not Alone

Millions of Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. While many fled across borders, many more escaped to safer cities within Ukraine. Among them is Maryna, a single mother who fled eastern Ukraine with her young daughter, leaving everything behind. Arriving in Kharkiv, afraid and empty-handed, she did not know how they would survive. But through the kindness of local believers and the generosity of supporters like you, Maryna found hope in her darkest moment. Below are her personal reflections on her journey.

“My name is Maryna.”

My name is Maryna. I am a single mother raising my young daughter, Olya, on my own. Our home was in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, but the war forced us to flee, leaving everything behind. We evacuated so quickly that we didn't have time to take anything with us. Empty-handed and brokenhearted, we arrived in Kharkiv.

“In the darkest and most difficult moment of our lives, God sent people to help us.”

Believers from a local church welcomed us with compassion and kindness. When we had nothing, they provided food, medicine, and warm clothing. I thank God for these people, who helped us survive the horrors of this war and hold on to our faith and hope.

But the greatest miracle happened within my own heart.

Before, I searched for security in people and circumstances. Yet a sense of emptiness and anxiety always remained inside me. When I came to God, I found true, profound peace for the first time.

Although our situation is still difficult, I have learned to trust the Creator even when I don't understand what is happening around me. I look at difficulties differently—not as a dead end, but as part of a journey. Things that used to seem so important have lost their power over me, while what is truly valuable has taken first place.

Now, I know that I am not alone. Even in the hardest moments, even when the sound of explosions surrounds me, there is One who is always near. I am endlessly grateful to God for my little girl, the most precious treasure in life. And with God’s help, we will make it through.

Thank you for your partnership and prayers!

Since 2022, IAFR has been assisting those who are internally displaced in Ukraine. Thanks to our generous financial partners, we have distributed over $265,000 to help Ukrainian churches provide basic assistance to those who are most vulnerable.
