Giving Tuesday is a Global Day of Generosity - a chance for us to extend our compassion and resources to those who need them most.
Please join with me in taking advantage of this opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of refugees through our support of International Association for Refugees (IAFR).
Peacemaking in a Refugee Camp
A deadly outbreak of ethnic violence broke out in Kakuma refugee camp this summer. Many were injured. 12 people died. Many shelters and churches were destroyed. Several refugee church leaders stepped into its aftermath to pursue the work of peacemaking and reconciliation.
When we visited them in October, we learned that the refugee church network with which we partner had planned a two-day peace and reconciliation conference. They were bringing together pastors from the tribal communities that were in conflict. They invited us to participate.
The conference ended with a Communion Service. Two pastors, one from each of the tribes in conflict, served the bread and the wine. It was a powerful moment. Everyone transcended their differences in Christ.
One of the pastors later commented, "We haven't seen or experienced anything like that in a long time."
These pastors are doing the heavy lifting when it comes to promoting peace and reconciliation in the camp. It is our privilege to partner with them.
Before the conference, the pastors took me to see four churches that had been destroyed during the violence. They told me that many people fled to other parts of the camp during the violence. Many have not yet returned – either because their shelters were destroyed or because they simply fear returning.
Because of our generous financial partners, we were able to send funds to enable the churches to rebuild. We hope to send funds to help rebuild at least some of the shelters as well.
Your donation, no matter the size, is a powerful act of kindness and solidarity. It sends a message to refugees that they are not forgotten or alone – and that there is a community that cares deeply about their well-being.
Many thanks to our faithful and generous financial partners who make it possible for our team to show up in the lives of refugees and asylum seekers every day!
