Refugee Youth Camp

"Let us embrace our diversity and make it work for us rather than against us!"
Pastor Nicholaus exhorted the young people in the room.
Songs From Many Nations
Youth from all over the sprawling refugee camp of Kakuma gathered in August for the annual refugee youth camp. As the weather turned sour, they had to overcome heavy rains and flooded roads to participate in the four days of teaching, singing, and fellowship.
They represented diverse nationalities including Sudanese, South Sudanese, Ethiopian, Burundian, Rwandese, Congolese, and more.
Refugee youth have been identified by the UN as one of the most underserved and vulnerable demographics in the world. That's why we are so happy to help make it possible for them to come together in Kakuma every year.
The youth led out during the week through praise, dance, and worship songs from their various languages and cultures, highlighting the beautiful diversity of those who are in Christ.
Four young people committed their lives to following Jesus Christ and were welcomed joyfully into the family of God.
We must live this message
Ethnic violence broke out this summer in Kakuma. Many were seriously injured. Some died. Mob violence and looting destroyed livelihoods in the camp. During youth camp, the cry of pastors to the youth was that the church in Kakuma is called to be a healing and peacemaking community of love.
"Despite diverse backgrounds and social origins, we must embrace diversity and combat bitterness. We must spread and live this message of peace that Jesus taught us together." Pastor Amos encouraged on the last day before the youth dispersed.

Seeds of Community
As the youth headed back to their shelters in their respective zones in the camp, they carried with them the powerful message of hope and encouragement. Their commitment is one of audacious courage as they seek to spread the way of peace in Jesus, tearing down the barriers of ethnic hatred and planting the seeds for unified communities that come together in love.
