Training in Michigan (2026)

Oct 29, 2025

- Rachel Uthmann

Following God’s instruction to “love your neighbor” is a simple idea but in practice it can be very complex. When Christians hear God’s call to love their refugee neighbor, they often show up with compassion and really good intentions but face a steep learning curve in navigating relationships with people in vulnerable circumstances. Loving your forcibly displaced neighbor in a world of political tension, bureaucratic challenges, human misunderstandings, and cultural differences can make it hard for well-intentioned Christians to stay involved in a sustainable and truly helpful way for the long term.

This is why IAFR Training is so well received! We don’t give you a template of one-size-fits-all action, but we walk beside you as you sort out the nuance of how to extend love to your neighbor with dignity, freedom, humility, and patience – the way God loves us.

If you’d like to learn more about our training and experience it for yourself, our next in-person training is coming up in January in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Foundations of Refugee Ministry | January 23-27, 2026 | Grand Rapids, MI (USA)

Grow your confidence and capacity to pursue fruitful and sustainable ministry among forcibly displaced people! Whether you're new to refugee ministry or bring years of experience, this comprehensive training will provide valuable insights and tools.

During our time together, we'll explore:

  • the world of forced displacement: key terminology, global trends, and Biblical perspectives

  • life-giving ministry approaches: IAFR's continuum of response and ministry that supports recovery and integration

  • navigating complex challenges: dynamics of combining evangelism and aid, effective collaboration with humanitarian organizations, and wellbeing of workers in high trauma environments

  • practical tools: context assessments, best practice statements, and more

Seminar Option (January 23-24): In Michigan, we’ll also offer the chance to register for Friday night and Saturday sessions only for those unable to join the whole training. This is a great way to learn some basics and consider first steps in caring for refugees in your community in a relational and sustainable manner.
